Burnham and the Dengie 100

Gallery of old prints - page 2

Historic prints of Creeksea, Althorne, Southminster, Tillingham and Ostend. All these antique pictures are from photographic postcards produced around the turn of the 19th/20th century. They are all from the collection of Michael Head, a well known postcard collector from Burnham-on-Crouch. Due to their great age, many of the old prints were badly faded or damaged but these images have all been carefully restored by Matt & Gloss photography, who are well known in the area for their antique photo restoration service.

Here are 3 pictures of Althorne and 2 of Southminster (the only other town on the Dengie peninsula). Creeksea Place (also spelt Cricksea, Cryxhey and Crixey) was originally built in 1569, but much of that was destroyed in 1740 and most of the current building dates from the 19th century.

Ostend was a small hamlet between Burnham and Creeksea and still exists on some maps. The 2 pictures of Tillingham show significant changes in the buildings and trees between the dates.
